Twelve middle school band members will be representing Clarke in the South Central Conference Honor Band on Monday, March 25, 2024. Other schools in the conference include Albia, Cardinal, Centerville, Chariton, Davis County, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, and Knoxville. Each school is sending seventh and eighth grade students to participate in this honor band. Cardinal will host the event this year. The Clarke Seventh Grade Band will be represented by Arrianna Parrish-Day (flute), Naomi Medrano (bass clarinet), Nanzy Tolentino (tenor saxophone), Neo Mora (bari saxophone), and Natalie Patino (French Horn). The Clarke Eighth Grade Band will be represented by Liliana Contreras (clarinet), Parker Truitt (clarinet), Luke Wade (alto saxophone), Macayla Hicks (trumpet), Jack White (trombone), Dylan Struble (tuba), and Joey Turpin (percussion). All of these band members are students of Christie Stortenbecker, the seventh and eighth grade band director at Clarke. Students have been given four pieces of music to practice in advance of the honor band. On March 25, all of the students from the various schools will rehearse together at Cardinal Schools during the afternoon as an ensemble for the first time. That evening, they will present a concert for the public. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Middle/High School Gym in Eldon, Iowa. Admission to the concert is $3 per adult and $2 per student. The guest conductor will be Jim Edgeton. Middle school students and staff celebrated Snowcoming last week! Students participated in dress-up days during the week, enjoyed fun activities during advisory, held their annual Snowcoming coronation on Friday afternoon, and finished off the week with the Snowcoming dance on Friday night. The MS/HS Jazz Band Concert is tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission is free. This performance is required for all jazz band participants. Eighth Graders will be taking a field trip to see the Iowa Wolves on Tuesday, February 6th, at 10:30. The game will be played in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena. Students will need to bring their own lunch or sign up for the school to provide one. Students can also bring money for concessions at the game. The 5th and 6th grade winter band concert is on December 7th in the high school auditorium. The band students need to arrive at 6:30 for warm-up. They will meet in the sixth-grade band room. 6th Grade students are excited for their field trip to attend the Drake Basketball game on Friday, December 8th in Des Moines! Students will need to bring their own lunch or sign up for the school to provide one. Congratulations to 8th graders Maahir Desai, Kenley Chesnut and Kaleb Short for being the winners of the foil boat competition in the Middle School TAG classes. Students designed and constructed boats out of aluminum foil to see how many pennies, dimes, and nickels each could hold before sinking. Maahir's boat held a total of 187 pennies, 83 dimes, and 10 nickels before it sank! That's A LOT of cargo!!! Kenley's and Kaleb's boats each held 183 pennies, 10 nickels, 84 dimes, 7 quarters, and, because Mrs. Schlichte ran out of change, 17 little round magnets!!! And, both boats were actually still floating! The winners received a king sized candy bar! Congratulations Maahir, Kenley and Kaleb!
