Input Requested on Computer Science Standards
Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise is asking for input on computer science standards that are under consideration in Iowa. In 2017, Senate File 274 was signed into law, which encourages computer science in every Iowa school, establishes voluntary computer science standards and creates a computer science professional development fund to help prepare teachers. The legislation was a response to efforts to help better prepare Iowa students for the demands of postsecondary education and the workforce.
The public is invited to attend a forum at Summit Middle School 9500 Windsor Parkway in Johnston, from 4-6 p.m. on April 10, or to complete an online survey that can be found here. Feedback will be used to provide guidance to the Computer Science Standards Review Team, which is expected to submit a final recommendation to the State Board of Education in June. If adopted, computer science standards will be optional for school districts.
