Clarke Speech & Debate Teams Win Leading Chapter Award
The Clarke High School Speech and Debate Teams have just been notified that they are the recipients of the 2016-17 Leading Chapter Award for the East Iowa District. They will receive a commemorative plaque from the district chair at the 2017-18 district tournament.
This coveted honor, based on student participation throughout the school year, is the highest recognition a school can receive from the National Debate & Speech Association. Only the top school in accumulated members and degrees per district earns this designation each year, and each school must wait at least five years before being eligible again. Out of more than 3,000 member schools nationwide, Clarke is one of only 108 to receive the Leading Chapter Award.
This award reflects 397 members and degrees over 19 years. In that time, several hundred students have been taught communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills through speech and debate. The Leading Chapter Award serves as an indication of the Clarke and Mr. Don May's relentless dedication to these students and to speech and debate education. Congratulations to Mr. May and the Speech Team for this remarkable achievement!
