MS/HS Students Make Huge Reading Gains

Story image 1_0

Clarke Middle and High School students achieved gains in their reading scores on the Iowa Assessments that surpassed the average gains students achieved nationally and most grades achieved gains higher than other students in the state.  On average, Clarke Middle and High School students increased their National Standard Score in reading by 18.25 points versus an average 14 point increase in the state.

"We attribute the increase to a greater focus on reading and literacy in both the middle and high school," said Curriculum Director Jean Bahls. "In the middle school, students take a reading class during 7th and 8th grade and all middle school teachers incorporate a reading routine into their daily lessons.  At the high school, reading classes are offered and teachers provide literacy instruction to all students three days a week during advisory."
